Importance of Student Attendance

Regular school attendance is vital for academic success. Please keep in mind that 10 total absences in a single class per semester is considered excessive.

Both excused and unexcused absences count toward this 10-day total (school-sponsored events do not count). 

If a student reaches or exceeds 10 absences, several steps may be taken:

  • Intervention: An assistant principal may put an Attendance Plan in place detailing what the student must do to save their class credit.
  • Academic Impact: A student may not receive credit for their class and receive an E on their transcript.
  • Restriction of Privileges: Students with excessive absences risk losing privileges such as student parking, attending dances, and participating in sports, clubs, or school-sponsored events.
  • Truancy: Ongoing attendance issues may be referred to the Wayne County Prosecutor for truancy.

Note: Chronic and other doctor-verified illnesses will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Written medical documentation may be requested when appropriate.
